How to Replace an audi replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and replacement car key audi (bitetheass.com) RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). 4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. 5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous problems in your car. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points.
